The Second Chance Cinema – 3.5/5 ✩
The Second Chance Cinema is about Ellie and Drake, an engaged couple who discover a cinema which shows them films of their formative memories. Through the films, they’re forced to confront not only their pasts, but share and reconcile those pasts with each other.
I was drawn to this book before I even picked it up. I loved the cover, I think it’s beautiful, and I love the old cinemas and ticket stubs, so I was intrigued very quickly.
I think Ellie and Drake are such compelling characters who, together, create a compelling novel not because they’re perfect, but because they are not. These are two flawed individuals and there were moments when I disliked each of them. They weren’t always open with each other and I didn’t think they always treated each other right, but I loved how these memories forced them to come together and grow as individuals and as a couple who learn how to treat each other with fairness and love and openness.
I also thought the way this novel opened was very strong. Without any spoilers, the place in which the novel opened and the place where it closed made the story feel like it had truly come full circle and I loved that.
